Moving Tips

No matter if you are moving nearby or whether it is a long distance move, it is a very stressful task. You have a lot of decisions to make as well as so many things are needed to be taken care of. There is also a lot of scope for messing up everything.

But let me tell you that planning everything in advance can set things right to a large extent. Therefore it is very important to prepare everything ahead of time. Follow these tips:

6-8 Weeks Before Moving:

  1. Make a list of all the things that you wish to take to your new home. Make a list of things that are to be taken care of by the mover as well as those that you will manage yourself. You can even go for a garage sale or dispose all unnecessary items.

  2. Get an estimate from all the moving companies, so that it can give you an idea about the cost.

  3. You can also involve yourself in a lot of research process and go for a professional moving company. It is recommended to go for top movers like AUTHORIZED MOVERS. After selecting the company, provide them with an accurate information and discuss necessary details.

  4. Keep a record of all the important information and receipts that are related with the moving expenses. Since many of these expenses are tax deductible, you can even contact Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to gain more information.

  5. Inform all those clubs with which you are associated, so that they can transfer or terminate your membership.

  6. Familiarize yourself with the new surroundings. Find out about the schools, parks and recreation, and community programs from the local Chamber of Commerce or Visitor's Bureau.

  7. Before moving, make sure that you transfer medical, property as well as all kind of insurance with the help of your insurance agent.

  8. Keep all the medical records in a file at a safe place. Make a note that you never forget prescriptions, vaccination records as well as all other specifications. Keep expensive stuff at a safe place.

4-5 Weeks Before Moving:

  1. If you are indulged in any kind of packing, then start collecting “moving” as well as “packing” supplies in the beginning. You can buy them from your moving supply company.

  2. Contact the post office and fill the postal change form so that you can submit the changed address to all other utility companies.

  3. Register your kids in the nearby schools. It would be best if you include them in the moving process as well. This will help them to make their own packing and labeling, according to their own preference.

  4. Contact utility companies in order to get their services connected to your new home.

  5. If you have pets, then make sure that you make appropriate arrangements for transporting pets.

2-4 Weeks Before Moving

  1. If you have children at home, then it is recommended that you should arrange for a baby-sitter who would play the responsibility of watching the kids on moving day.

  2. Remember to collect all those items you have given for repairing or cleaning. Return your library books as well.

  3. Instead of packing, it is recommended that you should carry your valuables with you. Some state laws say that it is not allowed to move the house plants. So you can give them to your friends, relatives or perhaps local charity.

  4. If you are traveling by car, then get the automobile serviced.

  5. You must know as to how much packing task can be handled by you.

  6. Make sure to clean the basements as well as attics. Clear you safety deposit boxes as well.

  7. Avoid any kind of exposure of software. So it is recommended that you should dismantle the computer system and take a back up on a hard disc.

Other tips:

  1. Label the items as 'fragile', 'should be loaded first', 'load last', and ' no need to load'. This will ensure the safety of the items.

  2. Make sure that the agent knows the correct address as well as your phone number.

  3. You must clean, defrost and empty the refrigerator at least two days before the moving process.

  4. Pack all those items that you will need on arriving at your new home in a separate box. These items can include- snacks, disposable plates and cups, bathroom items as well as trash bins.

  5. Make sure that you check your closets as well as drawers so that nothing is left.

  6. While unloading, make sure that there is no damage that is done to the items or if any item is missing or not. Prefer to choose reputed & reliable movers like AUTHORIZED MOVERS who handle your items with care.
